Mobile AJAX - Frequently Asked Questions

The first Rich FAQ we are presenting is the long overdue Mobile Ajax FAQ and was created by Ajit Jaokar, Rocco Georgi and Bryan Rieger. We welcome comments and feedback. AJAX is a browser technology that involves the use of existing Web standards and technologies (XML/XHTML, DOM, CSS, JavaScript, XHR - XMLHttpRequest) to create more responsive Web applications that reduce bandwidth usage by avoiding full page refreshes and providing a more 'desktop application-like' user experience. The term AJAX was coined by Jesse James Garrett in his seminal document at Adaptive Path.

Mobile AJAX FAQ - What Is Mobile AJAX?

Mobile AJAX is the extension of AJAX principles to the mobile environment, which includes other constrained devices such as gaming consoles or set-top boxes featuring Web browsers. While technologically the same thing, Mobile AJAX is looked at as a special case of AJAX, as it deals with problems specific to the mobile space including the areas of constrained devices and constrained Web browsers in general.

AJAX Navigation and Links

Mobile devices, by definition, have limitations. These include limited display, limited input capabilities, and the possible absence of a pointing device. Hence structure and navigation become critical in ensuring a good end-user experience. The following design recommendations should be considered:

Cellular AJAX Data Transmission Techniques

There are two main techniques for cellular data transmission, TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access). The objective of both techniques is to support multiple simultaneous data channels. TDMA achieves this objective by dividing the radio frequency into time slots. TDMA is used by the GSM cellular system. CDMA comes from a military/defense background and is currently used by major cellular carriers in the United States. QUALCOMM has patented large parts of CDMA (www.QUALCOMM.com). CDMA uses a more complex mechanism to support simultaneous data channels, which is outside our scope.

AJAX is different from other previous attempts to address this problem since it's based on existing non-proprietary standards that are already familiar to developers.

Real-World AJAX Book Preview: The Mobile Application Value Chain

Content owners include players like broadcasters (TV and radio), news agencies, publishers, entertainment companies (movies, music, and entertainment), and rights owner companies (music rights, sports rights, and general showbiz agents). Unlike the Internet, the general perception of the mobile Internet is that content isn't free. Content owners own the rights or represent copyright owners. Content owners believe that 'Content is king.'

Real-World AJAX Book Preview: Mobile AJAX

Globally, at end of 2005, there were 2.1 billion mobile phones versus a billion Internet users. Among those billion Internet users over 200 million of them accessed the Internet via a mobile phone, mostly in Japan, China, and South Korea. So the sheer number of mobile phones, especially in developing countries and Asia, coupled with the growing technical capacity of mobile phones makes what we say here significant.

Ajit Jaokar's Mobile Web 2.0 Blog: "The Dawn of the Widget Widget Web"

The World Wide Web, as we know it, is exploding. From its fragments emerges a new 'container based' Web based on Widgets. For the lack of a better term, I shall call it a Widget Widget Web. I have long advocated the power of Widgets to transform the Web as we know it. Hence, I am starting a new set of blogs on the future potential and evolution of Widgets.

Ajit Jaokar's Mobile Web 2.0 Blog: "Let's Create The Mobile Web Phone"

What I am proposing is a mobile phone optimized to accessing information on the Web (which is predominantly, but not necessarily, browsing and so could include Widgets and RSS). Who could do this? Many people but my bets are : Google, Opera, the operators (maybe 3 considering their recent announcements), a handset vendor, Nokia or a new start-up?

What Can Mobile AJAX Learn From the Fragmentation of Java ME?

Mobile AJAX has a lot of potential. However, many questions still remain about the details of how Mobile AJAX could be implemented and exploited. Ajit Jaokar looks at the problems that occurred in the evolution of Java ME (formerly called J2ME) and how Mobile AJAX and other browser technologies can learn from them.

Essentially, a smaller screen within the main screen on the desktop can display content originally targeted towards the mobile device, or more importantly, originally created on a mobile device. You can view it as 'widgetizing the mobile Web'. The possibilities for such a product from a mobile perspective are very interesting, starting with the fact that you could widen the distribution channels for mobile content.

The Impact of Web 2.0 / AJAX on Mobile Applications

Both AJAX and Web 2.0 are making a huge impact on the web. But what will be their impact on mobile applications? This session shows how AJAX and Web 2.0 have the power to truly transform the Mobile Internet. The session discusses how you can use Web 2.0/AJAX to overcome the issue of ‘walled gardens’ on the Mobile Internet and how you can develop your mobile applications to overcome the technological/market fragmentation on the mobile internet and thus gain a larger target audience for your application. We'll also examine why browsing applications (incorporating AJAX) will be the preferred method of mobile applications development.
